History of Ginsu Brands

Douglas was founded 110 years ago in Akron, Ohio as a manufacturer of automotive products while Quikut dates back 90 years as the manufacturer of the “Sharpest Knives on the Market”. The two companies integrated and became Douglas Quikut in 1964 and they grew to include vacuums, kitchen cutlery and fishing gear among their product offerings. Douglas Quikut joined the Scott Fetzer Family in 1964 and manufactured under three distinct brands: American Angler, Readivac, and Ginsu.

The amazing Ginsu knife became known to millions of consumers in the US through iconic television advertisements in the 1970s. The first Ginsu commercials began with a dramatic voice over that boasted the knife could “cut through a nail, a tin can, and a radiator hose, and still cut a tomato paper thin!” These advertisements included the famous “But wait! There's more!” line that has been a popular infomercial catchphrase ever since.  In the process, they established the formula for the modern infomercial and led to the commercial being called “the pitch of all pitches” by Syracuse University. The style of the ads has been heralded and heckled by the likes of David Letterman, Gallagher, Johnny Carson and Dan Akroyd. The Ginsu cutlery brand became so successful that the Ginsu knife is still one of the most well-known and well-loved consumer products in history.

Douglas Quikut re-branded in early 2017 as Ginsu Brands. Although no longer a manufacturer of Readivac wares, Ginsu Brands continues to produce quality brand name products from their facility in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. One of the best-known brands in housewares, Ginsu has come a long way by remaining committed to quality, craftsmanship, and value. The Ginsu cutlery line has expanded to include custom-engraved cutting boards as well as knives and knife blocks/sets. The American Angler brand of fishing accessories is best known for its premium electric fillet knives and is very popular among avid fishermen across the United States. We look forward to these two strong brands bringing Ginsu Brands 100 more years of success in the retail industry!
